The term utopia usually refers to an ideal society — thus utopism means to develop an ideal social model. We will discuss the details later, but in general this will be in the form of ´In the condition X the society reacts with Y, with the probable effect Z.´ To do this for a whole society is hard enough. A completely other thing is what I refer to by the term transformation. To plan a transformation means to find a way to transform the social system A into the social system B. Usually the system B was before developed as a utopia. The difficulty of the transformation is not only that it should be possible, but also safe. Revolutions, for instance, easily lead to an economical breakdown followed by (further) pauperization. In fact, where food and water may be cared for by the revolutionists, everybody who depends on regular medical supplements (for instance metabolical diseases such as diabetes or hypothyreosis) will be in danger. And there are many other things that wannabe-revolutionists usually don´t ever think about. Finally, a transformation should of course also avoid violence excesses like killings, rapings and so on.

Der Ausdruck Utopie bezeichnet für gewöhnlich eine ideale Gesellschaft — daher bedeutet Utopismus die Entwicklung eines idealen Gesellschaftsmodells. Wir werden die Details später diskutieren, aber im allgemeinen wird dies in der Form sein von ´In der Situation X wird die Gesellschaft mit Y reagieren, was den wahrscheinlichen Effekt Z zur Folge haben wird.´ Dies für eine ganze Gesellschaft zu tun, ist schon schwer genug. Etwas ganz anderes ist allerdings, was ich mit dem Ausdruck Transformation bezeichnen möchte. Eine Transformation zu planen, bedeutet einen Weg zu finden, um das Gesellschaftssystem A in das Gesellschaftssystem B zu überführen. Für gewöhnlich wurde das System B zuvor als Utopie entwickelt. Die Schwierigkeit bei der Transformation ist nicht nur, daß sie möglich sein sollte, sondern auch sicher. Revolutionen etwa führen leicht zum ökonomischen Zusammenbruch, gefolgt von (weiterer) Massenverarmung. Während sich die Revolutionäre noch um Nahrung und Wasser kümmern mögen, wird jeder, der regelmäßig Medikamente benötigt (zum Beispiel bei Stoffwechselkrankheiten wie Diabetes oder Schilddrüsenunterfunktion), in Gefahr schweben. Und es gibt noch viele weitere Dinge, an die Möchtegern-Revolutionäre nie denken. Außerdem sollte eine Transformation natürlich auch ohne Gewaltexzesse wie Morde, Vergewaltigungen und so weiter ablaufen.

Developing a utopia is only the first step. With a utopia you still haven´t got a transformation! To plan a working transformation is most likely at least as difficult as to develop a working utopia. A good utopia without a good transformation is just nice theory. And a good transformation might be even bad, if the destination utopia is not really good (either not well constructed and unrealistic/unstable, or even a negative dystopia).

Eine Utopie zu entwickeln ist nur der erste Schritt. Mit einer Utopie hat man noch keine Transformation! Eine funktionierende Transformation zu planen, ist höchstwahrscheinlich mindestens so schwierig, wie eine funktionierende Utopie zu entwickeln. Eine gute Utopie ohne gute Transformation ist nur schöne Theorie. Und eine gute Transformation kann sogar schlecht sein, wenn die Ziel-Utopie nicht wirklich gut ist (entweder schlecht konstruiert und unrealistisch/instabil, oder sogar eine negative Dystopie).

Highly complex systems (utopia) and processes (transformation) need to be planned thoroughly and with extreme care. Often when man tries to control or manipulate such, the results are worse than if he hadn´t done anything, and only in very rare cases the results are ideal.

Hochkomplexe Systeme (Utopie) und Prozesse (Transformation) müssen gründlich und mit extremer Vorsicht durchgeplant werden. Wenn wohlmeinende Menschen an ihnen herumschrauben, sind die Auswirkungen oft schlimmer, als wenn man nichts getan hätte, und nur in sehr seltenen Fällen sind die Resultate ideal.
